Winter Garden

During the winter months, I like to have fresh flowers and new green plants around the house to remind us that Spring is just around the corner.

This weekend, I made a trip to the greenhouse.
I found this Rosemary "tree" half-off.  The scent is fabulous.
It will be great for cooking too.

I also fell in love with this sweet little plant, Baby Tears (awe...)

I've been wanting to put together a few Terrariums.
Like this:

I went thrifting in search of a few glass cloches.
No luck, they were either not available or too expensive.

I had a few glass jars stashed away...

and the little plants fit in them perfectly.

With the exception of the plants, I was able to assemble my Terrariums using what I already had.

A little bit of green goes a long way.
Thanks for visiting.

  3. Ahhh...totally refreshing and spring like, exactly what is needed.

I've been looking for some good fake plants to put under my cloches but haven't had much luck. Maybe I'll have to break down and get some real ones. LOL

    1. I know - I have been wanting to do terrariums and the expense of special containers has stopped me until this moment. I have massive and small kitchen jars with lids. The lids are metal but the glass is clear. Viola, dragging them out of the back shelf now!

  6. There's nothing like fresh green plants to lift the spirits. Putting them in jars was a great idea. I assume it helps with moisture retention.

  13. Beautiful, but don't fry your plants! I did that a couple years ago, by putting a treasured African violet that my grandma gave me under a glass lampshade in a south facing window. :(

    1. How often do you have to water then when they are in the jar? Do you cover them tight or leave space for air?

  17. Love, love the terrariums. I've been looking for a glass cloche, as well. Totally agree about price. Saw some at Wysteria - I might break down but would prefer to find something vintage. Thanks for sharing the jar idea!

  27. Oh my I really love your blog.
And those baby tears. I have a hard time finding them here.
I am originally from the Netherlands and they are an easy find there.
    But here...
    Where did you find yours?
Since I am moving from warmer to a little colder climate... and I love plants...I am going to start some terrariums. Actually I bought some beautiful Gladiolus' today for in my new home.
Now, if Hubby Dear will hurry up and get the furniture...
    Home sweet home.
    Thanks for this idea.
    Beautiful blog.

  29. The glass jars are available "off and on" by the truckload at my favorite home decor store, GW (Goodwill). Now, I know what to do with the remainder of ones I bought that I'm not using in the pantry. A lot more fun......

  32. Will this cause any mold or mildew in time or can you keep them in the jars. This is an awesome idea!!
