31 Days of Character Building: Holiday Decor Part II Halloween

Welcome to Day 8 of my 31 Day Series, Building Character.
Yesterday, I shared our Christmas Decor With Character.

Today, I am going to show how we turned our builder grade spec home into...
A spooky haunted house...

The kids love to decorate for Halloween.  I struggle with this because the decorations they love...
 aren't pretty.

Each year, I try to balance their desire to decorate with mine.  Just being honest.

This year, I loosened up and let them decorate the family room. Hopefully, this will keep them from writing a book about how my passion for decorating wrecked their childhood.

While they were busy decorating the family room, I snuck off to the dining room.

This is what I threw together.

The spider came from The Goodwill...who wouldn't want a giant fuzzy spider?
The pumpkins came from the Dollar Tree.

As did the black crows.

I grabbed my witch's costume and hung it on the coat rack by the front door so it's ready to go at a moments notice.

Since the house is still torn apart from the new floor project, this was all I had time to do this year. So, in order to give you Halloween decor with character, I will have to refer to our Halloween past.

Click here and here if you would like to see last year's Halloween post.  There you will get the scoop on these drippy candles.  They were a really fun, super easy DIY project.

I swapped the mats in the kids' silhouettes for Martha Stewart's Halloween scrapbook paper.

The large monogram was another easy DIY project.  One of my 31 Day posts will include a tutorial on how to create one yourself.

I layered green moss and bittersweet over Christmas lights, and draped gray spooky cloth from The Dollar Tree from the mantle.

These prints are from The Graphics Fairy (love her).  I printed them out from her website and stuck them in my black frames, right over my family photos.  Fun and free!

The most fun we ever had decorating for Halloween was this project...

The kids and I stuck goggle eye stickers on our family members in the family photo collage.  We had way too many laughs while doing this...

The Deadly Sweet Shop was also a big hit with the kids.

So, I have to admit, the kid's haunted family room turned out great.  Maybe I'll share it with you but first, I have to get the guts to go in there, it's pretty spooky.

  1. Perfectly balanced between your desire to keep it beautiful and the kids desire to spookify it.

  3. The witch's costume was a nice touch. You're a good mom. I remember growing up my best friend's mom always had a Christmas tree decorated with peach bows, peach ornaments and white lights. The kids weren't allowed to sit on the couch in that room. Child abuse!!!

  6. Ahh!! I used a Halloween graphic in a frame this week too!! Only a different one from you. I did print out the skeleton (he is so cute) but in the end he is pinned to my teenage son's bedroom door!!! He thought the skeleton was cool too!;) Love your decorations! You went all out!

  7. I love the save them from writing a book comment!! I feel that way too sometimes! My poor daughter wants to "display" all of her little knick knacky trinkets and I tell her pick 2 and the rest go in the drawer :) I have the same problem at Christmas too...they want to decorate the tree how they want and I want it to look like it is a photo shoot for BHG :)
