Yesterday, I talked about the board and batten wainscoting in my master bedroom. Today, I'd like to share our picture frame molding in the dining room...
Like the bedroom, the dining room seriously lacked any hint of a personality when we moved in. Since it is the first room you see upon entering our home, I wanted it to be special.
(The baseboards and shoe moldings are not finished in these photos. They were removed for the new floors a few days ago...just sayin').
Our home is overall casual but this room is mainly used for family entertaining. I went with the picture frame molding treatment in this space because it's a little more formal than board and batten.
My husband was the artist behind this masterpiece. The trick to this project and the most time consuming part is measuring.
This project was completed long before the birth of this blog so unfortunately we did not document the process for a tutorial.
There are a ton of internet tutorials out there. Rhoda has a fabulous step by step tutorial. This is not the process we used however, it will take you through the steps she used to get the same look in her gorgeous dining room.
This project is very cost effective and gave the room the character it lacked.
The recent addition of our "wood floors" enhanced the white moldings and gave it a bigger presence.

ReplyDeleteThis is very nicely done, it looks "right". Did your artist husband by chance use any specific proportioning methods for determining the height of the moldings? If so, would he have an explanation to his method or a calculator? As I am close to beginning a project similar .

Hi there, thanks for the nice compliment. My husband mapped the molding out himself, no calculator. He is very talented that way :) There are many books on the market that can walk you through the project if you would like more specifics on measuring. I like Home Depots 1-2-3 series for trim and molding. It is a great resource for trim projects. Hope that helps! Sarah

ReplyDeletewe are in the process of doing this same project in our dining room and have searched high and low for the molding you used for the "squares". i really like the look of it and don't want the skinny, smooth trim that i've seen on other examples. i like the "chunkier" look. could you tell me where you got your materials for the top trim and the square moldings?
are they MDF or real wood?

I hav the same windows, but the top windows are separate from the tall bottom one, and i always thought it would look strange to have that little section of wall showing between the windows... it looks like you have something over it

ReplyDeleteI love everything you've done in your home! I have molding in my home that needs to be freshened up with new paint. Could you tell me what sheen of paint you used on your molding? I have used semi-gloss on some trim in other rooms of my home but it feels overly shiny for the large amount of molding that I have in my living room. Thanks for your help:)

Stunning! I'm doing my dining area with 3" crown molding and chair rail and picture frame molding below the rail. The wall space above will be done in "Quiver Tan" by Sherwin Williams which pretty much look identical to your scheme barring any online resolution nuances in color. I will also have the entire area below the chair rail painted with a crisp semi-gloss white along with the moldings.
