31 Days of Character Building: Simple Builder Door Upgrade

Welcome to Day 18 of my 31 Day Series Building Character.

 This post is all about how we gave our stock grade doors a personality.   Here is what they looked like before...

Replacing the trim was one of the first projects we tackled in our home.  We removed all of the thin builder grade trim and baseboards and replaced them with pine boards. We did this throughout the entire house for a cohesive look. 

It helped to tie together all of the different custom molding treatments we have going on.

We wanted the trim to be thick, have a few knots, and a bit of a rough texture for character-building purposes.  Pine is perfect for this. Our home needed a little rusticity to balance out the new materials like the shiny black granite.

We used 1 x 6 boards for the top of the doors and the baseboards. 1 x 4 boards were used for the vertical door trim pieces. I painted all of the interior doors on the main level black (Martha Stewart ~Silhouette) to contrast with the white trim.

   ***Tip:  When working with pine boards, it's important to use flat, straight boards.  When you are purchasing your material, be very picky.  Lay it all out on the floor to make sure it lays perfectly flat and it is not warped.***

Pine is very economical {cheap} therefore, it's not perfect.  A good sanding and priming are essential.

As a final touch, all of the brass door knobs were replaced with black knobs.
