Our builder grade spec home had wall to wall builder beige carpet. We have lived here 7 years and have replaced the flooring 3 times. Yes, 3 times in seven years.
With three kids and a dog, we decided it was time to do something once and for all. I started looking into hardwood not only for aesthetic character building reasons but, for practicality. I soon realized that real hardwood floors really aren't all that practical.
That's when I decided to explore the option of laminate. I was shocked when I came across this flooring at Sam's Club (Select Surfaces in Oak). The price was phenomenal, $1.50/sq foot. Seriously! I loved the look, I loved the maintenance-free finish, I love the easy installation and I loved the price.
The best thing about this floor, other than the way it looks, is the commercial grade quality. Exactly what is needed in my home. The hand-scraping detail definitely makes it appear more like real hardwood.

The wide planks click together in any pattern that you desire. I chose the stair-step pattern.
I had the floor professionally installed. The "click together" feature of this flooring makes it a great DIY project. Since we had several adjoining rooms and not a lot of time on our hands, we decided to have a professional handle it.
It has completely transformed our home. Even though it is not the real thing. The only down side is the gasp we get from people when we tell them it's laminate. Funny how we have to tell them, though...

Gosh! I wish this product had been around when we ripped out the 20 year old carpet in the house we bought. We chose laminate, too, but it's nothing like the one you have. Great choice. I do like the laminate in that it's been easy to CLEAN.

ReplyDeleteThis flooring sounds like a wonderful option to consider! Our hardwoods are right through the MIDDLE of our house so I don't know exactly how to connect it all together with new flooring, but it seems so affordable it might be worth redoing the entire house!

ReplyDeleteWe have the exact same floor in our new house almost 2000 sq ft of it and it does not have the hollow sound like the cheaper laminates. It has the padding built onto the back of each piece of wood. Love this floor would definitely buy it again. Our builder suggested it over hardwood. He put real hardwood in his house two years ago and his wife begs him to remove it from the den and put this in like they have in their living room. He said the upkeep of the real wood is horrible.

DeleteMy parents real wood floors were appraised at $60k (they installed themselves so they didn't have that much in them) The floors were junk and all scratched up by their dogs toe nails and looked horrible anywhere a rug was if the rugs were removed because it had rectagled wear marks in the floors. Even the floor protectors for under computer chairs caused a huge patch of damage. The floors didn't even last 6mo without looking horrible. They reciently built a new home and purchased laminate from Sam's and nothing scratches it and it looks new. Go with laminate and have someone experienced install it. We too have laminate in part of our house and it holds up to 90lb dogs and kids just fine.
DeleteWe did 1600 sq feet in this flooring Upon the advice of our installer we added premium quality padding even though it already has a thin pad attached. No hollow sound. Easy to clean and we surprise all of our visitors when we tell them it is laminate. Love them!
DeleteI have the same floor I bought at Sam's and was concerned about the clicking or hollow sound also. I put a sound insulation under it just to be sure and I haven't had one person who looks at it or walks on it know that it was not hardwood flooring. I am a purchasing manager for a national home builder and had the choice of hardwood and could have gotten if for free. But because I have a dog and have seen through the years how bad hardwood looks after just a year or 2, I went with the Canyon Oak Laminate. I installed it myself in my living room and after living with it for six months I am about to install it in the rest of my house. I am going to skip the sound insulation this time as I think the pad that come with it should be enough. Just a vapor barrier under should be fine.

How is this floor as far as upkeep? What do you do to clean/mop it? Does it show footprints and smudges at all? We have a shiny laminate floor that we can't keep clean at all, looking for options to substitute ours with.
DeleteI have this floor (actually got it because of this blog!) and it really is as good as everyone is saying it is! :) fingerprints do not show at all (I have three kids). I clean it with the wet swiffer which works great. Hope this helps! :)

I have heard conflicting things regarding cleaning laminate flooring and have heard that it is difficult to get it clean without leaving a film. ReplyDeleteThe floor does have a slight hollow sound but, it's not as bad as other laminates I have seen. So far, I have found a Swiffer Mop works the best for cleaning.

After stumbling upon your blog and seeing what you have done, I think we are going to have to use the same flooring you did. I read on the Sam's website it comes with a foam backer attached. But I saw this and scratched at it with my keys on the display and couldn't hurt the stuff. I have a dog who cannot always be trusted and so I've been concerned about how this would hold up. ReplyDeleteI bought a box of this, laid it out at home and wanted to love it. Love the color, love the rustic quality, the NOT-plastic sound, and the wide planks. BUT I just can't get around the uniform lines/ridges that are used to simulate handcraping. If they were random, this flooring would be incredible. Anyone else that has installed this floor notice it? I'm afraid my eye will be drawn to it constantly and ruin it for me - it's the ONLY thing that makes this floor look fake!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I have not noticed that. I had the planks laid in a stair step pattern which I think helped to create a random-ness to the scraping detail. I am very happy with the look and after having it for a few months, I would make the same decision. I always say that nothing is as beautiful as real hard wood floors but I think this product is second best. Thanks for chiming in :) Best, Sarah

ReplyDeleteI am really considering using this flooring when I replace our carpet. I just want someone who has used this product to tell me if this laminate really sounds funny when you walk on it like I keep reading about. Does it make a difference? I am going to be putting it in the dining room, foyer, great room, master bedroom, stairs, second floor hallway, and at least one bedroom used as my sewing room. This is a huge area and I am scared of making a costly mistake. It looks so good in the pictures. Help?
ReplyDeleteI bought a box to test out.....with the thick padding, it sounds much less hollow than most laminates. The only thing I didn't like was the too-unfirorm lines that simulate the handscraping - buy a box and spread it out at home, walk on it and see what you think. What I ended up selecting is the Golden Arowana stranded bamboo flooring at Costco. It's real, it's uniclic for a floating installation and is stunning...$1.00 more per square foot. Won't be installing for a couple of months yet (when remodel is done), but I can't wait. Did the same thing - bought a box and spread it out and I can't take my eyes off it!

ReplyDeleteI have been looking at new flooring for years and cannot seem to pull the trigger on it. I have a pier and beam house and the current wood floors crackle. It makes my husband crazy. My living room, kitchen, and dining room are all one big room basically. Would you recommend them in a kitchen or bathroom? I want to be able to mop often as I also have an inside fur baby and three boys. Also, I had a friend that had glossy finish floors and you could see every footprint. They wore socks all over the house to keep from leaving bare feet footprints. Do you constantly have to sweep and shine your floor?

I have always despised laminate flooring...until I went to my vet of all places. (I think they use the same flooring you have.) Between you and them, I am sold! ReplyDeleteNot quite sure why you don't believe real hardwoods are practical I have had them in every room including laundry, kitchen, baths, etc., they hold up beautifully with little care. I can always tell when someone has used laminate as opposed to hardwoods they sound differently when walked upon. I'm sorry but I would not trade my beautiful hand-scraped Brazilian cherry hardwoods for laminate flooring regardless of the grade.

We just put this exact flooring in our main living room, kitchen and dining room. It looks amazing! Thanks for sharing the info, it is exactly what we have been looking for and couldn't be happier. I have not noticed any "hollow" sound (agree with another comment about the padding underneath helps) and as far as the detailing on the planks, as long as the planks are in a random pattern you would never know.

Things to remember about laminates! We are on our second set of expensive, professionally installed laminates in our kitchen, breakfast room and sunroom. They absolutely, positively CANNOT take water! If an errant ice cube finds it's way onto your floor and melts before you see it, it will cause the seams to buckle (think old laminate countertops that swell up!), if your fur baby happens to have an accident and you don't see it right away, it will "swell up"! Every water drop shows and the manufacturer's suggested cleansers leave messy looking films on the floor. We also have in dining room that we don't use very much and in the downstairs bedroom-those we installed ourselves and they seem to be tighter fitting and of course, not as many water "accidents" in those two rooms. I would love to replace with hardwoods, but not in budget.

I have these floors in the kitchen and have not had issues with water damage, swelling or buckling, even after a fridge leak. Murphie has had a few accidents that have cleaned up great. DeleteI've had laminate flooring in my kitchen, dining room, and family room (which also serves as the entry area from the garage for our family of 4) for 10+ years and haven't had any buckling or any other type of damage issues either...and I am a very messy cook. I've dropped things, had cubes melt, major cooking spills, etc.
DeleteIt does creak some with weather changes as it is a floating laminate, but it does have the foam backing so I don't hear the hollow sound that's been mentioned.
As far as cleaning, we vacuum it regularly and then use WilsonArt Flooring Cleaner on a swiffer type mop for heaver cleaning.

I had laminate wood-look flooring from Sam's Club installed throughout my home 2 years ago, and it has been wonderful! Guests comment on my "wood" floors. I have a young child who has friends over often - they have spilled juices, and have even hidden the accident for days before telling me, and still, my floors look great. They are easy to clean and look beautiful!

DeleteFor all of you with laminate and claim it is easy to clean, how are you doing it? I have very similar laminate to what is shown here, which we love, but it shows everything. I have been told repeatedly not to use water and definitely not a steamer. We clean it on our hands and knees currently and would love a better way. Suggestions please?
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer. Sorry to hear that about your floor. I don't have the same issue. Mine are pretty forgiving. I use a dry swiffer for dust bunnies and chunky stuff (eww...). I have a cleaning service that cleans them with a light mist of vinegar/water and a microfiber cloth. They clean up very well. I have heard if you use fabric softener on your cloths that it will leave a streaky film on your floors. If I were you, I would contact the manufacturer of your product directly and ask for suggestions.

ReplyDeletesuppose that depends on you and your house - I have laminate installed in the main area of our house - where we come in off the garage, the kitchen, family room, dining room and swiffer my floor maybe 2x a week. Like any totally flat flooring, you will see any little piece of stuff that gets walked in (small rocks from shoes etc) but it's no different than having tile, hardwood or linoleum flooring in that respect.
DeleteI have hardwood floors and I can't stand them! They are buckled and scratched. If you have pets and/or kids, laminate is the way to go! If installed properly water will not be a problem. I believe they seal the seems in areas such as bathrooms or kitchens. We have been searching for a good laminate and found your blog in the process. Just bought a box to see how it would look in our space. It is absolutely gorgeous! The price for the quality simply can't be beat. It saved us so much on our project that I have enough left to upgrade my countertops to quartz! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this!

The only downside has been that the long transition pieces in this color are no longer available on the Select Surfaces web site so we will have to match it from lowes in another brand. We love it so much we decided to do our stairs in it as well.

ReplyDeleteOMGeeeee, been trying to figure out flooring for my two rambunctious four legged babies. They do laps around my dining room table, that no one can stop them from doing, they just have to get it out of their system, then it's down time! so I know hardwood is not the way to go. Been looking at the ceramic (wood-look) tile, but dang there's not too many color choice I really love, and the price, si not to budget friendly. This stuff looks beautiful! and the price is nice. I had looked at Lowe's the guy showed me some really good looking stuff, but still $4 sf. This is a price I can be serious about! Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteWe installed wood floors in our whole house 20 years ago and they still look great. Oh sure, the kitchen is a bit worn, but no buckling or anything of that sort---in spite of water accidents. For me, it was a great investment over 20 years.

ReplyDeleteThose floors are gorgeous and I never would of guessed... laminate!! We have real wood floors downstairs (that we recently refinished ourselves). But have laminate in all 4 bedrooms upstairs (got rid of all the carpet in the house!). Its been about 5 years since we put it in and it doesn't look anything like this! They've come a long way since we've done ours. Might have a re-do in my near future...;)

We have 2 crazy kids and 3 crazy dogs so at this time, real wood is NOT an option because my hubby and I are too anal about the scratches (we have wood in our current home now). We figure we would put these in (they are beautiful) and let them destroy them for the next 10 years and then lay something really nice once they are older. To all that installed them, please tell me how they have held up. Thank you!!!

ReplyDeleteWe have this same floor at my work place ~ I work for a general contractor. We especially needed flooring to stand-up to workers coming in with dirty boots, but attractive floors to show to our customers. Customers are always amazed to find out it is laminate! This flooring is so great and easy to keep clean; it is now going to be installed in our home later this year to replace all the carpeting. Always wanted hardwood, but with 3 big dogs and contant stream of guests in our home, we need a sturdy floor - this is it!

ReplyDeleteWe are in the process of installing these very same floors in our living room. Our couch has made two huge scratches. We just got some felt to go under the furniture. Does any one else have any issues with scratches? How do you handle the scratches? I really want to keep the flooring it does look beautiful! My husband is ready to tear them out!

DeleteWe have had these same floors for over 2 years, and have never had an issue with scratches or anything at all. We have 4 grandchildren, 2 dogs, and lots of people in and out and they still look brand new.

We built our home 15 years ago and had Pergo flooring installed downstairs and hardwood upstairs. Our laminate was never a problem until our main water shutoff valve began to leak and leaked for more than 4 months before it buckled the laminate. (No lectures on letting it go that long, please.) My point is: good quality laminate like this and others don't buckle just because the dog goes on them. Before we installed this to replace the 15 yod floors, I bought a box, laid it out and poured water on it and waited for the floors to buckle and it didn't happen after waiting 2 days, so we installed it. BTW I mop it with a steamer using a mix of vinegar and water. Two years later and still no problem.
ReplyDeleteWe have this same hardwood flooring from Sams Club as well. We installed it 2 years ago and it looks as good now as it did when we first installed it. We also did a scattered pattern in our entry way which is quite large and our study off the entry and it looks amazing!! No one has yet to guess it is a laminate, because there is no hollow sound what so ever!! Don't hesitate to buy this flooring from Sams Club as it is a great product and you won't be sorry.

ReplyDeleteDoes Sam's Club do the install or did you contract privately? We were looking at a similar floor from Lowes at $1.70/sq ft, but when the estimate came back it was about $10/sq ft with install. Is that typical? I have no clue! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteInstalling this everywhere but our kitchen. Love what we have finished so far, but I can't figure out this part: how do you abut this flooring with the kitchen tile? We have a span of about 30 ft where the tile runs into where the laminate will go. The thresholds they sell at Sam's won't hold up for that long a stretch. What did you do?

ReplyDeleteI have to sweep my house every single day, and sometimes twice because my white terrier sheds everywhere! She's not even a very long haired dog! But when I think about it, all that hair use to just hide in the carpet.
DeleteWe installed this flooring in our bedroom over a year ago and love it. Yesterday, we began installing it in the rest of our home (bedrooms, dining, living, and foyer). After 15 years, two kids, and spills galore; the berber is going!
