The time has come to update my daughters room. She's approaching her teens and her passion for horses has shifted into other interests like school, sports, friends and lipgloss.
Mourning the loss of her horse themed bedroom,
I put on my big girl pants and agreed to re-design her bedroom one last time. To make the design process easy, I started looking for a piece of art to use as my inspiration. It had to be something special that she wouldn't outgrow.
Something large and graphic to replace the horse mural...sniff.
I was surfing Houzz.com when a room with a gorgeous piece of personlized art caught my eye. It was a pop art style photo on canvas of the family dog. I thought to myself, what a fun way to personalize a space.
Duh. The love of Hannah's life is our dog, Murphie.
Not only do Hannah and Murphie share the space, but they are truly best friends; she'll never outgrow him.
I contacted the company that created the masterpiece in the Houzz room...
Pop art is only one of the many styles of personalized art they offer. Since this is a teen's space, I wanted the piece to be young, modern and fresh, so I opted for pop art style on a large (36/36 inch) gallery wrapped canvas in Hannah's favorite colors. I followed the instructions on the website to place my order.
I sent them this digital photo...
And this is what allPopart.com created...
It felt like they were just as excited about this piece as I was. Before they shipped it, they emailed me a digital proof to preview. I requested a few changes to get the spirit of Murphie just right. They were happy to tweak it until it was the perfect representation of his personality.
The day it showed up on our porch was a great day at the Macklem house. I can't put into words how excited I was she was.
We immediately went to town designing her new room. Using the art to define our new color scheme made designing the space a breeze.
Here is the design inspiration board...
We used the graphic design of the portrait as our inspiration for the other elements in the space. Simple black and white drapes, modern graphic floral bedding, striking black chandy and fun accessories mimac the feeling of the pop art.
The new space includes new retail products, thrifted vintage finds and repurposed furniture.
Here are the sources for the images used to create the design board...
Stay tuned to see Hannah's new bedroom come to life. Painting begins next week. Bedding is on backorder until June so it'll be a little while before the final reveal.
I'll post projects and tutorials along the way.
Thank you, allPopart.com. Not only for this amazing addtion to our home that we'll cherish for years, but also for making me a lot less sad and a lot more excited about this right of passage.
***This post brought to you by allPopart.com. The opinions expressed are 100% mine. The smile on Hannah's face is 100% hers.
Love the Murphie art, and the design board is swoon worthy!

ReplyDeleteI love the inspiration - having a daughter of similar age I relate to the difficulty of decorating for this age. Murphie is an adorable inspiration. Can't wait to watch the process.
ReplyDeleteI love the old design but I also love what you have planned so far. Very excited to see how it turns out. =o)
ReplyDeleteSame colors my peanut loves :) Adorable room :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun piece of art for your daughter's room! Her new room design looks fabulous. And Hannah is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteIs it wrong to say I feel sad she has moved past the horse themed room too!?!?! Your daughter's room is my inspiration for the next time we decorate MY daughter's room!! That being said, you have amazing ideas to make your daughter's room a teen dream! I can't wait to see it when it's done!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Can't wait to see it all done!!
ReplyDeleteMy 13yo is out growing her horse themed room too and I'm a little sad! Thank you for the idea of a great jumping off point!! Can't wait to see what my daughter comes up with ;)
Sarah, I can see why you were so excited about designing this space...OMG it is stunning and the colours....you are too clever. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia
ReplyDeleteSo flipping cute, Sarah! I've been thinking of getting a wrapped canvas of our dogs (one whom we lost this winter...sniff), but I never thought of pop art! What a wonderful way to capture the playful spirit of your dog. Your ideas for her room are, no surprise, gorgeous! Can't wait to see it all unfold. ~Kerri, A Pop of Pretty
ReplyDeleteSheesh, girl, you are TALENTED! I've been perusing your blog for the last half hour after finding a link on Pinterest and I love everything you do! Thanks for all the great ideas & keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that picture of Murphy is so adorable! We have a cocka-poo and I'd love to do something similar to hang in my daughters room. Thanks for sharing the details!
ReplyDeletelove the Murphy art. This post was so timely as I am in the process of redesigning my daughters room. Sadly the princess theme (eventhough very subtle) does not fit my 12 year old anymore. We have the same color scheme going on here and her bedding is very similar (found it at Delia's). Can't wait to see how your daughter's room turns out.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors and the dog print! Would one big print be better or three smaller?
ReplyDeleteLove the colors you choose! The picture of Murphie is great. Your room design plan is gorgeous as always! Your daughter must be so excited. Please post pictures when the room is finished!

ReplyDeleteHmmmm.. your giveaway page won't open up from my google reader. I'll come back later to try again. I would love that giveaway or just your precious puppy would do to.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteYour daughter is absolutely stunning! Sorry about the annonymous profile, it's kinda creepy but I don't know how to add my oomment any other way! I'm new to this following bloggers thing...but I so enjoy reading yours. And I just had to tell you how gorgeous I think your daughter is (I have daughters myself). Your work is great and has been an inspiration for me in many of my projects.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteYou are good Mom and it appears an even better friend to your daughter...the mark of a good Mom, being intune with your growing kiddos unspoken words, even if it hurts a little. Please please please tell me what kind of dog you have. My 11 yr. old has been wishing for a dog for so long. I have never had a pet in my life....I am trying to educate myself b4 we take the plunge. Do tell, Do tell. Thanks, Megan W.
Thank you everyone for your kind words, from myself and Hannah. Megan, Murphie is a Bichon Frise. In my opinion, he is a perfect family dog. He is very smart and so sweet. Thanks for stopping by.
