Thrift Store Jewelry Box Makeovers

A little while ago, I shared the plan for my daughters room makeover.
Work in her room is underway and coming along nicely.  We are checking projects off the list every week, including this one...

I've always had a weakness for jewelry boxes.  I can't resist them while thrifting.  Especially when it's half off day at The Salvation Army.  Without ever knowing why, I began collecting them a few years ago.  They are so much fun to search for and dirt cheap.
I was able to find two of these for less than $3.

Here is what they looked like before I gave them a little makeover...

{Before}

After a light sanding, a quick coat of spray primer and two coats of pretty semi-gloss Kyrlon spray paint, here is what they look like now.

When I began preparing Hannah's room for the makeover, I couldn't believe the amount of jewelry, lip gloss, barrettes, headbands and hair pins this girl has accumulated.

The little drawers, doors and compartments in these little boxes should {hopefully} help to keep her chotchkies more organized.  They make a really cute display grouped together on her dresser.

It is the easiest project in the whole world.
The trick is to find boxes that are clean on the inside.

I didn't even bother to remove the hardware before I spray painted them.
Hobby Lobby, Michaels and my local Ace Hardware seem to have the best spray paint color selection.
I used all Krylon colors.

I chose gray, white, black and turquoise to compliment the design plan that was created around a piece of custom pop art {click here if you missed that post}.

A few quick tips, before spray painting/priming I taped off the inside of the box to protect the lining and the mirror. My sister assisted me with this project, when it came time to paint the inside, she sprayed a puddle of spray paint onto a paper plate and applied it to the teeny tiny areas with a detail brush.
She's a genius.

Do you have any tricks like that up your sleeve?

  4. These are great. My daughter also has a ton of girly stuff - lip glosses, hair ties and little jewels. I think I might spray out her baby-ish jewelry box to go with her room. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. I love this Sarah so easy to do and so functional! The best part is that all the stuff is hidden. My 10 yr old daughter has so much stuff and it drives me bonkers to see it. Right now its in a basket that is over flowing in on top of her dresser but now I am going to search for these and spray paint them! Great idea..thanks for the inspiration!

  15. Is it easy to spray paint and get a nice finish? I can't find any cheap boxes so really don't want to ruin semi expensive boxes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. Yes, spray painting them was pretty easy. My advice is to use a good quality spray paint and several light coats of paint. Have fun! Sarah

  16. Loved your idea so much I went to my local thrift store and bought a jewelry box for each of my daughters for $2.99 each! I sprayed them hot pink to match their room decor and they love them, thanks so much for the inspiration!

  17. What a great way to change the look of generic jewelry boxes. :-)

They are never that inexpensive here. Every time I see a jewelry box at a thrift store it costs close to $12 or more.

  20. I used a damp microfiber cloth and a tiny amount of liquid dish detergent to clean the velour-ish inside of the jewelry box I got at a thrift store. It worked like a charm. The microfiber cloth pulled all the dust/hair out easily. Sice the outside was in good shape, I didn't paint it, but I just might after seeing your makeover.

  22. I almost boughta really cute one today. It had 2 bright brass necklace holders that spun and were on the inside/top. They were really ugly and i wanted to paint them, also. But, I couldn't figure out how to get them off to do that? Any ideas. They didn't screw in? Thanks

  23. How about nail polish to give the hardware a bit of extra bling?

I've been shopping for the perfect jewelry box. Instead, I'm going to get a grouping. Thanks for the idea!

  24. Great idea! I love them too. I have one that was bought new, but somewhere along the line, something spilled on it and it has an ugly spot on it. May have to try this!

  25. I too collect junk store jewelry boxes. They are magic! When I find one that is dirty on the inside, I simply replace the felt with a coordinating color. I love the colors you used. However, I think I would have removed the hardware before painting to give it a contrast. But they look fabulous as you did them as well. Nice work!
