Welcome to the last post in my series titled, "Four Steps To a Worry-Free Kitchen Makeover." As a design professional, I know firsthand that for many homeowners the thought of a kitchen renovation is accompanied by anxiety over all the decisions that need to be made. I'm teaming up with Sub-Zero and Wolf to share my tips for each stage of a kitchen renovation to help put your worries to rest.
Here is a look back at the other three posts in this series:
Step One: Define Your Goals.
Step Three: Executing Your Design Plan.
Today's post will address the last step: Living in Your New Kitchen and Making It Yours.
Hiring a design professional right from the beginning stages of your project will automatically reduce anxiety associated with a kitchen remodel. In the end, they've helped you make all the big decisions and together you have created a kitchen that will stand the test of design time. When the time comes for the contractors to pack up their tools go home, it would seem like the time to consider your project complete. At this point the main design elements are in place and your beautiful new space is by professional standards considered "installed". However, be prepared that it may not feel like it's really yours until you begin the very last step of the makeover process. Breaking in your new kitchen. Entertaining family and friends, cooking and living in your new kitchen will create memories that bond you to the shiny new space. Here are three ways to get started...
Add Personal Touches
One of my favorite ways to bring an instant dose of familiarity to a brand new space is to incorporate family heirlooms or treasured items. Some of the first things I introduced to my new kitchen after the makeover were my favorite cookbooks, our Grandmothers dishes and a treasured family photo. Not only do we use these things daily, but they double as decorative accessories that give the brand new space a personal touch. There are so many fun and attractive ways to display items such as these. Browsing through kitchen photo galleries or sites like Houzz.com, you can get a lot of ideas for staging personal items. For example, I typed in "cookbooks" in the Houzz search bar and found some great inspiration. I love the way they have the cookbooks styled in this image...
Here is a great example of vintage dishes displayed in fresh, updated, modern day kitchen…
This is fun use of photography in a kitchen…
Cook Your Favorite Meal
During every stage of my own kitchen makeover, I envisioned myself cooking for my family. Each design decision was made with this vision in my mind. As soon as the contractors left, I began cooking one of our favorite meals right away. My brand new kitchen and I instantly bonded. Putting your new appliances to use has to be one of the most exciting points in a kitchen makeover. If your new kitchen features Sub Zero and Wolf appliances the Sub-Zero and Wolf website offers exclusive tips to help you master their products and create delicious meals. In addition, industry professionals share their passion for the perfect food and the experts at Sub-Zero and Wolf have created a library of recipes tailored to their appliances.
Host a Family Party
Another way to instantly bond with your new space is to host a family get together as soon as the space is complete. Shortly after my kitchen renovation, I hosted a big family gathering. Of course I enjoyed showing off my new kitchen, but having my family share a meal together christened the space. The time we spent preparing our food, eating and cleaning up afterwards marked the end of my kitchen makeover project and the beginning of many new memories to be made in my new space. Seeing the new kitchen you love packed with people you love is the best part of a kitchen makeover.

A Wolf gas range for our kitchen! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love the light fixture. Do you have a link for where I could find it? I'm slowly giving my own kitchen a makeover and I think it would be a great addition!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
If I upgraded my kitchen, I would change the backsplash, change the cabinet doors, change the patio doors to French doors and upgrade the oven and microwave.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great series - I've truly enjoyed it! And the added bonus of an opportunity to win the gift card? AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, it is Wendi. Loved this post as just last week my husband and I were standing in our new, dated 1957 kitchen discussing one of your posts on Sub-Zero and Wolf. I had just finished cleaning every last drawer and cupboard and unpacked every last kitchen box and had every thing in it's place. Looking around we were discussing what needs updating and besides the amazing, original. Westinghouse wall oven, it all needs an overhaul. We were talking about what appliances we would use and I told him that we really needed to look in to Sub-Zero and see if Wolf offers cooktops. He is on board. :) I also need to get from you the name of your kitchen cupboard painter as there is no way I can paint these cupboards. Amazing, handmade cabinets and cupboards (each drawer was numbered on the bottom so they knew where they went ~ smile) but dated for sure. I too loved cooking that first meal for my family after I had the kitchen settled. Thanks always for your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI would change out my dishwasher!
ReplyDeleteWe have a small kitchen, so I would open the wall to the dining room and add a breakfast bar. That will give us more seating and more counter sace.
ReplyDeleteSince new cabinets are not in the budget I would paint our cabinets and if I find the courage I would paint the counters too! Thanks for the chance at the giveaway. Couldn't come at a better time of year!
ReplyDeleteI would ugrade my kitchen with stainless appliances, a tile backspash, add glass to a couple cabinet doors and replace the island. Big dreams with hopes they will someday become a reality.
ReplyDeleteI would upgrade my kitchen by getting all new stainless appliances, new cabinets, a tiled backsplash, new countertops and new flooring.
ReplyDeleteWe just moved into a 15 year old house that needs updating. Last night the green corian counter on our island cracked about 2 feet! I was in tears and my sons said, "It's OK mom, you wanted to redo the kitchen anyway." I want new cabinets and countertops and a new gas range. We just had the plumbing done in our old house for a gas range but never got to enjoy it but we are planning on doing the same thing in our new house.

We just bought a newly-constructed house and already I am ready to update the kitchen. I really would have liked glass put in two of the cabinet doors. When we were building the house, everything we asked for in upgrades added $$$ to the final cost, so we stopped asking as we really wanted to pay cash for the house. I think changing the doors at this time would be easy, I hope. Have so enjoyed your series. Judy C thanks you for this wonderful opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI would upgrade our kitchen with a new Wolf Sub Zero stove we sure need a new one.
ReplyDeleteheather hgtempaddy@hotmail.com
I'd like to raise the upper cabinets, refinish or paint them, install back splash, install a farmhouse sink, new counter tops and create a bar! My kitchen is stuck in the 80s.
ReplyDeleteWe've endlessly talked about a kitchen remodel to give us more space and that would open it up to the living room. But have you heard about the shoemaker's wife? Well, I'm married to a carpenter/contractor and we've lived in the same house for over 30 years! I can only hope...
ReplyDeleteI would replace my horrible, gross sink and faucet!
ReplyDeleteWe are in the middle of a kitchen renovation right now! I love the tips you have suggested! The countertops are going to be installed next week, so then I will be able to get in there and actually make a meal! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would love to add pillows to my banquette!
ReplyDeleteI would put in new cabinets. Desperate need of storage!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to someday replace the peeling-at-the-corners wallpaper in our small galley kitchen with something tile. Maybe good old fashioned white subway tile because I like the look.
ReplyDeleteSo as not to double-post, my tweet entry is here: https://twitter.com/pucksandmacaron/status/530569674346729472
If I had the money... I would rip out the flooring and put in hardwood looking tiles... Then I'd paint all the cabinets white. Put in new handles for the doors... The stove would go, and be upgraded... In my own dream land it would be gas (although we dont have gas available)... so maybe a propane upgrade. neyabenz(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen just went through a partial remodel, but I had to keep my old cabinets. The one thing I would really like to do would be to change out the cabinet doors to more of a Shaker style.
ReplyDeleteJust finishing up a huge kitchen update and hope to have a Wolfe gas cooktop in place by Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI would update with new countertops and cabinets! Mine are just awful!
ReplyDeleteWe'd probably buy a new fridge. It's the next appliance that is ready to go. It's a lemon and is slowing fading. Thanks for the giveaway!
