Combining Edgy Prints and Contemporary Colors With Traditional Elements

Welcome to Day Three of my 31 Days of Design Series. Today's featured design was a really fun living room project that we just completed for a client looking to introduce contemporary gray tones and some edgy prints into her traditional home. (Please click here for more information on my affordable design services).

This is what we created for her...

Here is a look at the true to scale floor plan illustration we provided of the space that includes all of the elements we included in her design plan...

Here is a look at the floor stain, trim color and wall color we selected...

The sofa we chose is a streamlined piece that features nice, clean, lines and sink in comfort for the family to cozy up on...

The gray sofa, gray wall color and white trim are warmed up by the gorgeous wood floors and this stunning palette of colors we used while choosing accessories for the space. This color palette was provided to us by our client as a palette that she was drawn to during our consultation.

We recommended a large, graphic, monochromatic rug to punch up the design and provide a ton of pattern. Here are three options that we provided for her to choose between...

A pair of sleek, contemporary chairs in a contrasting fabric to the sofa were selected to create a cozy conversation area. We provided two upholstery options, a warm yellow or a crisp white...

To give this space a unique personality, I curated a custom mix of fabrics to be incorporated in the form of toss pillows on the sofa and chairs...

Keeping budget in mind, I shopped at one of my favorite retailers for quality furniture at great prices, Home Decorators Collection. I found a coordinating TV console and bookcase that are absolutely stunning and bring a ton of style and sophistication to the design...

To dress the windows, I chose beautiful, off-the-shelf drapery panels in a gorgeous gray and white patterned fabric. They look completely custom. I recommended that the drapery hardware is mounted as close to the ceiling as possible to give the room added height and as wide as possible to make the windows look larger than they actually are...

Every well put together, transitional space includes a mix of metallic finishes. Therefore, I gave her a pair of lamps in a shiny mercury glass finish...

For another metallic hue, I incorporated a pretty semi-flush mount light with a hint of gold. A little gold brings a sense of formality to the space which is perfect for this design that has a healthy mix of casual elements.

To further enhance the metallic accent theme, I selected a stunning mirror for the space over the console table...

In addition to the main design elements that we selected, we also gave our client some tips on accessorizing and finishing off the design. For example, here is an idea we gave her for styling her coffee table...

  1. I really like this design. I have a dark leather sectional and would love to see what you would do with my living room using this same color palette. I love you style!
